Paul was a gentle, generous and warm person,
a great brother and uncle, and a loving son.
|
|
|
|
Paul, known affectionately as Short by his friends, was a talented guitarist and guitar teacher. He played
in many different bands over the years, and was well known in the music industry throughout
Ireland.
|
|
|
|
In his younger days he played in, Teddy Palmer and the
Rumble Band. More recently he played in Mind your Head
and in Half Stoned Cowboys. |
|
|
|
Half Stoned Cowboys are known for their
regular performances at the Pavilion bar on the Ormeau Road,
Belfast, and for their annual gigs in Donegal.
|
|
|
|
In recent years Paul very much enjoyed his annual trips to
Moto
Clube Faro
Biker's Rally in Portugal, where he made many friends. |

Jorge, one of Paul's Portugese biker friends, said of
him, "Short was a
big heart standing on two legs". This is a description that
Paul's family recognise immediately.

I have a great memories of the Short and the
laughs we had travelling around Ireland with Johnty and Sharon after I
became the unofficial roadie with the Half Stoned Cowboys in the mid 90s
after meeting the Short while I was busking in Letterkenny.
I always loved Pauls unique attitude
which made him a gifted musician and a true friend.

Well, its that time again, FARO TIME, It'll never be the same without you, missed you last year 07 I will not be going this year. but it will not be that I'm not thinking of you. There is not enough room to write all my memories, laughs, and good times that it was my honour to have shared with you and the boys.

Shadows were falling & I'd been there all day throwing stones at your
window. Just wanted to say how good it was to know you, to labour a
point. What now to blunt the jagged edges of life? Who now to walk
slowly backwards with on the ruthless conveyor belt we called the
system? Ready at any moment to leap into the unknown to avoid being
dumped with the rest of them. Our choice then, not theirs. Watching
ourselves being overtaken by so many beautiful faces, knowing that
behind each one there's been some kind of pain.
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there. One more stone, just one - -
- and there you were, gazing down at me with those tired bloodshot eyes
that always blazed with life. Thoughts in my mind were striving to turn
to words in my mouth before they vanished, but I stood in silence, just
looking.
A grin played around the top of your beard. "I made it, Big Lad. It was
a nine day camel ride. Left me a bit stiff and sore but I stayed on. It
was the bloody camel that snuffed it". And the evening came to life with
your laughter til the moon reflected from the tears in your eyes. I
tried to blink mine away --- and you were gone.
My mind exploded with all the things I never said and wanted so much to
say. My tongue ached to speak but was still.
Yet I knew you could hear every unspoken word. After a moment I felt
peace and my mind was quiet. I half whispered into the fading light,
"Short? No way in the world Paul. You were the Big Lad".
That's when I smiled, climbed back on my camel and rode on, knowing in
my heart that when my own nine days are up you'll be waiting in a corner
somewhere with a massive spliff and a knowing grin.
See you then, Big Lad. Your brother,
Alan. (15 September 2007) |

I did not make the trip to Faro this year, but I
had the privilege to meet you and the boys the last two years. I
watched as you came to Quitara on the back of big Dave last year.
I was sad to hear of your passing and my thoughts go to those who love
you. The very little I knew you there's one thing I am sure of is
that your spirit will be in Faro with the many friends you have during
that time of year. You will never be forgotten.

Paul -
I went to Faro & it was brilliant. Now I understand why you loved the
place so much. You really were famous out there & while I am very sad
that I didn't go with you on previous occasions when you asked me - I am
very glad I went this year in particular. All the yarns about various
people & tall tales of your adventures were told to me by others. You
were missed by all - but there was a real sense that you were there.

A big thank you to our brother Norman for his hard work in constructing this site. Paul's grasp of technology was limited to "Green for go - Red for stop" when using his mobile phone,
but I know he would be proud and a little surprised to have this web site in his honour. I think of you every day Paul
and, as the lads in Faro have taken to writing in their e-mails to me, S.L.O. Short lives on.
